This essay is part of the theoretical analysis corresponding to the doctoral research on the role of Ecuadorian universities in the process of social innovation. For its preparation, a review of the relevant literature on the mission of universities, social management and the definition of social innovation was developed. An approach from critical theory is established to invite reflection on the mission of universities and their role as agents of social transformation that seek the consolidation of democratic processes and social justice. It is proposed to integrate the principles of social management in university work, specifically in terms of the substantive functions of research and linkage, focusing on the development of participatory research projects that seek to empower communities and promote the exercise of deliberative citizenship, within the framework of the principles of solidarity and common good.
Keywords: participatory research. social management. University. social innovation.
