Pierre Bordieu understood that the struggles, in politics, happen with unequal weapons (capitals) that move the choices of the representatives of the population in the political field. This study aims to verify if there was a change in the profile of the candidates offered to the population and of the candidates actually elected to the office of mayor, as well as if it is possible to identify changes, by ideological field (right-left) in the municipal elections of Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil in 2016 and 2020. Data from the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral were used, from the aforementioned elections, considering characteristics of gender, color/race, marital status, age group and re-election status. The statistical method of the chi-square test was used to test the association of profile change. The results point to the existence of significant differences between the different ideological fields of the political spectrum regarding the profile of candidates offered by the parties and those elected in the respective elections of the period.
