The new southwest maranhense industry
socioeconomic impacts in the city of Imperatriz - MA

This paper aims to analyze the socioeconomic impacts of the implantation of a pulp and paper industry in the city of Imperatriz, located in southwest Maranhão, Brazil. To do so, the research was based on a bibliographical review, study of technical publications and articles, as well as the collection and analysis of a set of data from secondary sources, being verified the behavior of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the Firjan Index of Municipal Development (IFDM), in the period from 2008 to 2016. The results point to economic growth, especially since 2012, when the municipality reached high GDP and development repercussions. In the end, the new industry contributed to the strengthening of local and regional economic and development, with an increase in the participation of the industrial sector in the formation of GDP, with consequences of improvements mainly in the areas of education and health, also reflecting a great deal on commerce and service, promoting a positive multiplier effect in the city and throughout the region.
